Legalizing Cannabis Cultivation For Hemp In India!
There have been many discussions concerning the use of cannabis globally, but in India, it has also made headlines for its legalization of cultivation.
Jai Ram Thakur, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, predicted an economic boom with the legalization of hemp cultivation because thousands of people rely on it.
Thakur responded to requests for information in his Budget speech on Saturday by saying “Commercial hemp farming is permitted and regulated in several countries and some Indian states.”
“Investments and jobs are created as a result. The state government aims to establish a policy that allows for hemp cultivation in the commercial sector, with an appropriate regulatory framework,” said Thakur, who is also the finance secretary.
Although the Coronavirus pandemic was prevalent, the Budget for 2021- 22 presented by the CM is a populist one but a deficit one.
Several experts told IANS there are huge demands for opium in the pharmaceutical industry. Opium is derived from poppy plants, which are grown throughout the state’s high mountains, mainly Kullu Valley.
The state of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh have selectively cultivated cannabis and poppy, generating revenue estimated at Rs. 800 billion to Rs. 900 billion annually.
It is estimated by police officials that more than 60% of the poppy and cannabis smuggled out of Himachal is exported to countries such as Israel, Italy, Holland, and other European countries.
Those remaining are then shipped to Nepal or other states in India such as Delhi, Goa, Punjab, or Punjab.
In Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Chamba districts, large areas are said to be devoted to growing cannabis and poppy (opium). In the Kullu Valley alone, police records show that cannabis is grown on 50,000 acres.
Foreigners settle illegally in remote villages and are actively involved in smuggling narcotics, admit the police because they are attracted by cheap hashish.
Growing high-yield variety cannabis seeds have been one of their frequent interests, as they have provided high-yield seeds to growers in high altitudes.
It has long been well-known in the Kullu Valley that Malana, a village in the valley, produces hashish known as Malana Cream, a purified resinous extract of the cannabis.
Concern has been raised relating to the increasing involvement of Nepalese nationals in illicit drug trafficking in recent years. A company in India is selling cheap charas that originated from Nepal as ‘Malana Cream.
Putting an end to any illicit drug trafficking and properly regulated import, export, and farming- Himachal Pradesh’s CM foresees a big, safe future in legalizing cannabis cultivation for hempInIndia.
